ocean beach.

Wednesday was a spontaneous kind of day.

Jesse and I both spent the daytime putting our noses to the grindstone at work, as usual, but halfway through the afternoon, I realized our summer is slipping by and we should do something fun! So, after work, I picked up Jesse at his work and we headed to Ocean Beach for their weekly farmer’s market.

We wandered the crowded aisles of the market and observed the ubiquitous eccentricities that make the people of OB unique. Dreadlocks, maxi dresses, and bare feet mingle with the fanny packs and athletic shoes of tourists.

The free samples curbed our hunger for awhile… I especially enjoyed a blackberry vanilla balsamic vinegar and a garlic pesto dip. We didn’t buy anything though, and instead set our sights on Hodad’s.

Neither Jesse or I had ever been to Hodad’s (in fact, he had never heard of it… perhaps the first time ever that I’ve known more about a place in San Diego than he does!), but I had heard it’s good. It lived up to expectations and was worth the 20+ minute wait in line outside for a table.

When we got to our table for two, we found it was actually in a car!Other tables are made out of surfboards, but I think we got the best space in the house.

this isn't us! we forgot our camera, but thanks to jerryjoy.net, we can remember our car-table.

My chocolate shake was made from real chocolate ice cream, still chunky enough to see where it had been hand-scooped from a chest freezer. My cheeseburger rivaled In N Out burger in terms of freshness and quality ingredients… but Hodad’s won in the end, because they carry ranch dressing (something the palm tree-laden fast food chain does not). Jesse’s double bacon cheeseburger was nearly too large for him to put his mouth around and definitely too big for him to finish… which is saying something for the man with the nearly-endless stomach! All in all, a fun and tasty night.
